Pumpkin and Cherry Chocolate Bites

Pumpkin and Cherry Chocolate Bites

I have to admit that I have a sweet tooth. Some weeks it's worse than others, but I notice that the craving is particularly strong during the weekday afternoons at work. There are some days when I want a sweet treat so badly with my afternoon coffee and it literally takes all of my will power to avoid buying something on campus. To save myself the $$ and limit the amount of added sugar, fat, etc, I decided to make myself these pumpkin and chocolate cherry bites to satisfy those afternoon cravings:

Carrot Apple Zucchini Bread

The long weekend has come and gone and the unofficial start of fall has begun! I am going to miss the summer days (although we can barely say we had a summer this year), but I am excited for the fall season. I love the crisp air, fall fashion, pumpkin spice lattes, hiking, and of course the baking!

The long weekend is right around the corner and whether you are heading up to the cottage or going to a party/BBQ this weekend you will want to bring these butter tarts along with you! Life is as peachy as you make it to be...

The end of summer is one of my favourite times of the year for baking (next to fall and Christmas) simply because it's peach season. Peach season spans from July-September in Ontario, but mid to late season varieties are superb for baking, preserving or eating fresh. I haven't gotten into making peach preserve, but I will never miss an opportunity to make a peach baked good.

Nailed it or failed it? The Infamous Crêpe Cake

Nailed it or failed it? The Infamous Crêpe Cake

A few months ago I saw a cake on the cover of Canadian Living that looked absolutely divine. This cake is atypical because it is made with alternating layers of crêpes and cream. Come on, how awesome is that!? I have been talking about making this cake for awhile now and all I needed was the perfect occasion to make such a fancy cake. Such an occasion came about the other week since my mom was having a milestone birthday. Check out the recipe below to read about how hard (or not) it was to make this cake.

Red Velvet Cake -- What's all the hype about?

Red Velvet Cake -- What's all the hype about?

Aloha friends!

In a post this week featured on Refinery29, a writer discussed their dislike for red velvet cake. In short, the writer seems to feel that red velvet cake is nothing more than chocolate cake with a huge amount of red food colouring thrown into it. We have to say that we disagree! Over here at the Domestic PhD our mouths are melting just at the thought of eating red velvet cake. Although you can't always quite pinpoint the flavour of the cake, who doesn't want a smooth, chocolately cake smothered with cream cheese or buttercream frosting!? What is with all the hype you ask? Let us break it down for you.

Tasty and Healthy Banana Muffins

Tasty and Healthy Banana Muffins

One of my favourite things to do is bake and I especially love creating healthy and delicious treats. My favourite muffin has to be a classic banana chocolate chip... I mean who doesn't love the combination of  chocolate and bananas? This muffin recipe was a childhood favourite of mine and one of the few things my mom ever baked (lets just say I did not inherit my love for baking from her). I experimented with my favourite childhood recipe and finally tweaked it just the right amount to make it healthy but still delicious.

How do you like them apples?

How do you like them apples?

Aloha friends!

A couple of weeks ago I was assessing my fridge situation and I realized I had turned into an apple hoarder. I've really been enjoying snacking on an apple on my commute home to curb my hangry feelings. When I grocery shop I always make sure to grab a few apples, but I realized that turned into me buying more apples than I was eating.

A Feast for the Undead

A Feast for the Undead

Aloha friends!

I have no words after Sunday night's episode of The Walking Dead. I'm sure you are well aware by now that I am a huge fan of the show. It has been a torturous six months after the season 6 finale cliff hanger. I am glad I have equally as nerdy friends who have spent the last few months theorizing with me about which characters were going to get killed off.

Summer Isn't Over Until You've Baked a Peach Pie

Aloha Friends!

I hate to say it, but the end of the summer is fast approaching! The fact that it's peach season is the only thing that makes such reality a tad bit easier to digest (and the fact that I also really love fall).
