Nutrition Month 2017- Take the Fight out of Food!

Do you ever get frustrated by food and nutrition? Maybe you can’t figure out why you feel bloated after eating certain foods, have family mealtimes that are mayhem or are unsure about which foods are best for a particular health condition. I call these “food fights” – they represents times when you struggle with yourself or others about what to eat. Part of my job as a dietitian is to coach people to calm these food fights, so I was super excited that the Nutrition Month 2017 theme is “Take the Fight out of Food” – it’s exactly what I do every day!

The Breakfast Debacle

I've been doing a lot of complaining lately to anyone who will listen about how bored I am with breakfast. It seems like such a silly worry to have, but it is something that causes me slight stress every AM.

The only consistent aspect of my mornings is coffee, but as I wait for the kettle to boil it's the same thought every morning, "what do I eat!?" I sip on my coffee, watch the news, and debate until my stomach feels like its going to implode. (I acknowledge that once I find a full time job my mornings will turn into the great race to get out of the house on time, and gone will be the days of flexibility with the academic life -- unless of course I get an academic job!)

Did you know that you eat approximately 100 meals every month?! March is Nutrition Month in Canada and Dietitians of Canada is challenging us to make small changes to our eating habits one meal at a time. 1 month, 100 meals, lots of opportunities to start new healthy routines! With more than half of adult Canadians (52%) living with chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes, and approximately 30% of our children living with overweight or obesity, its time for us to start thinking about sustainable changes to promote life long health among ourselves and the ones we love most!
