Roasted chickpeas are a great plant-based option to include in your diet and they are so versatile (e.g., throw on salad or in a wrap, serve as an appetizer or snack, use as croutons in soup, or add as a topper on hummus). You can also play with many flavour combinations to suit your own taste - sweet (e.g., honey & cinnamon), salty (e.g., simple salt & pepper) or savoury (e.g., paprika, cayenne). Chickpeas are also a great option because of their nutritional benefits.

Chickpeas are a good source of fiber, protein and folate:

Fiber helps to:

  • Keep you regular
  • Lower blood cholesterol
  • Control blood glucose

Protein is important for:

  • Muscle growth and repair
  • Maintaining healthy skin and nails
  • Building hormones and enzymes
  • Feeling satisfied longer after a meal

Folate is needed for:

  • Reducing the risk of certain birth defects
  • Preventing anemia
  • Promoting a healthy heart

How do you prepare chickpeas before roasting?

Rinse canned chickpeas to decrease the sodium content by almost half. As well, wash canned chickpeas with cold water to make them easier to digest and reduce gas-related symptoms. If using dried chickpeas, soak in water (3 cups of water for every 1 cup of chickpeas) for 4-8 hours (suggest soaking overnight) and discard the water before rinsing.

Our Tips for Getting Perfectly Roasted Chickpeas

Roasting chickpeas cannot be any more simple. Toss in olive oil, salt, roast and eat! Before you get started, check out our tips below for perfectly roasted chickpeas!

  • Dry chickpeas as much as possible after rinsing. The more dry the chickpeas are, the more crispy they will be after roasting.
  • Discard chickpea skins (as best you can), because the skins trap in excess moisture. Try rubbing a cloth or paper towel over the chickpeas to pull off majority of the skins.
  • Roast at 400 degrees. The high temperature will help rid moisture and create nice crispy chickpeas. Note: Other than salt, toss chickpeas in your spices of choices after roasting. Some spices can burn when being cooked at such a high temperature.
  • Roast chickpeas for ~30 minutes and let them sit in the oven after you have turned off the oven while they cool down.

We hope these tips are helpful. Happy roasting!
