Get Involved and Have Your Say!

Aloha friends!

Health Canada has two more opportunities for you to get involved by providing your input for the following:

1. Consultation on front-of-package nutrition labelling

Health Canada is proposing mandatory front-of-packaging labeling for foods high in nutrients that are a public health concern (i.e., sugars, sodium, saturated fat). Health Canada would like input from consumers on the following:

  • Warnings for foods high in sodium, sugars and/or saturated fat
  • Updates to nutrient content claims and other nutrition-related statements
  • Nutrient levels (thresholds) used to identify if a product is high in sodium, sugars and/or saturated fat
  • Foods containing sweeteners

2. Consultation on banning partially hydrogenated oils in foods

Natural trans fats, those found naturally occurring in foods, are not thought to be harmful. Trans fats that we get from industrially produced foods have undergone a process to create partially hydrogenated oils -- the main source  of trans fats in the Canadian diet. This process prevents fats from going rancid (so food products taste good longer), allows fat to be more stable when heated at high temperatures (good if you want to fry the food product), and turns liquid fat into a solid (foods can be made into spreads, such as peanut butter). The trade off? The trans fats introduced during food processing increase the risk of heart disease.

Health Canada is proposing new regulations that will ban the use of partially hydrogenated oils in foods sold in Canada and they want input from consumers on this matter.

Take this opportunity to get involved! Both of these online forms are available until January 13, 2017.
